ONE CENTURY: Portraits of centenarians and the activities that bring them joy - Part I

Bonjour!

I’m thrilled to start a new photography blog here, but a bit sad to end the original Wordpress blog after 600 posts! It will be more convenient to have it integrated with the website, and I plan to post more regularly, especially for those of you who are not on Instagram and do not see my work on a daily basis.

I can’t think of a better way to start this new blog than to introduce you to my new photo documentary project: ONE CENTURY: Portraits of centenarians and the activities that bring them joy.

ONE CENTURY is more than a photography project; it is a celebration of the human spirit. Through these images, I want to inspire viewers to appreciate the beauty of aging. Many centenarians engage in activities that promote physical and mental stimulation. Some enjoy gardening or swimming. Others find solace in creative pursuits like music, painting or writing. This project aims at documenting these extraordinary people NOW, doing what they enjoy the most.

I'm using the same fixed lens camera for this project as I use for all my work: The Fujifilm X100V at 23mm.

I am actively looking for centenarians in Minnesota and Western Wisconsin. In 2024 the project will also extend to other locations: Paris, France - Oaxaca, Mexico - Madrid, Spain - New York City, NY. Please Contact me here if you can help me find amazing centenarians.

RUTHIE KLATTE ~ 100

“I eat a lot of lutefisk, I stay out of bars and I always vote Democrat!”

Ruthie lives in her own house, she still drives her car, and does her own cleaning and shopping! She quilts with friends on Wednesdays but her favorite activity is gardening. I’ll visit her again in the summer. Stay tuned...

Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA.

GORDON KIRK ~ 100

“I’ve been blessed, I never even had a headache!”

Gordon Kirk wanted to serve as a paratrooper during WWII, but the U.S. Army was segregated and he landed in Normandy as a troop truck driver instead.

His favorite activity is to talk about his days in the military. He does so with the most amazing accuracy! Pictured here in conversation with his friend Grant.

St Paul, Minnesota, USA.

ELAINE ANDERSON - 102

“I just feel like I’ve had the most wonderful life.”

Elaine lives independently and swims every afternoon.

St Louis Park, Minnesota, USA

RICHARD KING ~ 100

“You’ve got to keep your mind working.”

WWII Veteran/Pilot, Richard is passionate about airplanes and history. He still rides an exercise bike daily.

Woodbury, Minnesota, USA.

More centenarians will be featured soon. You can visit the project gallery here.
