This week my guest is New York photographer David Carol. We talk about his early years on worldwide assignments as a stock photographer, the people he met along the way, how he recently started his own publishing company and so much more. Take a listen and enjoy!
Bio
David Carol was born in New York City. He attended the School of Visual Arts and The New School for Social Research where he studied under Lisette Model. He was the first assignment photographer for The Image Bank photo agency (now part of Getty Images) at the age of 26. David has traveled the world taking pictures for himself and others for over thirty years.
David is a photographer first and foremost. He currently works daily in the real world of commercial photography as the Director of Photography at Outfront Media (formerly CBS Outdoor) as well as being the Editor-in-Chief at Peanut Press Books a new imprint that publishes high quality photography books. Yet he also loves giving other photographers a platform to share and discuss their work with the photographic community. He is able to do this as a contributing writer for Rangefinder Magazine and Photo District News. David also judges for the prestigious PDN Photo Annual every year as well as doing portfolio reviews at Palm Springs Photo Festival, ASMP Fine Art, APA, Filter Photo Festival and Savannah College of Art and Design. David also loves curating photo shows at such spaces as The Center for Fine Art Photography, Colorado, Darkroom Gallery, Vermont and Lightbox Gallery in Oregon. He also serves on the Board of Advisers for the Center for Alternative Photography: Penumbra Foundation.
David is the author of six photography books. He recently completed a trilogy of books, “Where’s the Monkey?”, “Here’s the Deal!” and “All My Pictures Look the Same.” with Cafe Royal Books, London.
His first book 40 Miles of Bad Road… is a ten year retrospective of his personal work from 1993 through 2003 with an afterward by Anne Wilkes Tucker, photography curator at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston.
His second book All My Lies are True… is a collection of photographs taken throughout his twenty-five year career.
His third and most recent book is actually a non-book called “THIS IS WHY WE CAN’T HAVE NICE THINGS!” The non-book contains 40 photographs and 14 accompanying text plates unbound in a clear Lucite enclosure with an essay by Jodi Peckman, Creative Director and Director of Photography at Rolling Stone Magazine.
David is available for one on one mentoring and teaching sessions. He is also available for private portfolio reviews, lectures, presentations, and book consultations that include editing, sequencing, layout and marketing strategies.
